Club/Bar
New York has been waiting for a club that harks back to a time when the season's latest shoes weren't necessarily what got you in the door. The front bar, spiked with larger-than-life reeds, has seating and a small stage area, while an industrial feel pervades the airplane hangar-like main dance room, overlooked by a balcony on three sides. Other touches--an art gallery, a white subway-tiled tunnel--pay homage to classic New York street themes. Second-level areas shift into VIP lounges depending on the night.
The club's diverse crowd--veteran scensters, Chelsea boys, guys in suits, girls in stilettos and club kids--make the 2,750-capacity space feel like a glam New York party every night. Johnny Dynell's Saturday soirees add the underground vibe, while occasional circuit-style parties lend a 24/7 feel. The music changes nightly and from room to room, from progressive and tribal to hip-hop and high-energy house |

Gypsy Tea 33 W 24th St New York, NY 10010-3208 (212) 645-0003
Club/Bar
Bouncers guard the entrance to this two-level club. Hip-hop and rock pump out of the Phazon sound system in the modern-feeling main room, with banquette-like seating and some room to dance. A separate DJ spins house upstairs, where there's more bottle-service seating and a dramatic tiled bar. A fish tank amuses those in the VIP section, who lounge on ornate velvet-covered chairs. The Gypsy cosmo is the house specialty |

Ikon 610 W 56th St New York, NY 10019-3512 (212) 582-8282 Club/Bar
You know a club's big when more than 4,000 people can legally dance the night away. Inside the three-level monolith find five separate rooms, a smoking deck, a stage for live performances and the requisite VIP areas. Plasma televisions and a powerful sound system keep the partiers from getting restless. On Thursdays, hip-hop DJs power up the sound; on Friday, it's rotating house music DJs; and the weekend closes out on Saturday with Latin beats |

M1-5 52 Walker St New York, NY 10013 (212) 965-1701
Club/Bar
Lofty ceilings accentuate the lavish, red-drenched walls, but the jukebox, pool table and dartboard maintain M1-5's neighborhood tavern vibe. The cryptic name refers to the bar's zoning code. In the 1960s, the city allowed artists to live in this light manufacturing district, given that they manufactured art. Fortunately for local artists, $5 beers and cheap drinks allow patrons to enjoy the elixir of inspiration at a fair rate. |
